Sweden: Shared Changing Rooms for Women and Men at Vällingbyhallen Pool in Stockholm

FALCON POWERS – The Stockholm City Council has announced the allocation of nine shared gender-neutral changing rooms at the renovated Vällingbyhallen sports and swimming pool. It is known that changing rooms in Swedish pools and sports halls typically include showers and a changing area where people often move around without clothes.

The decision by the Stockholm City Council stipulates that the nine flexible changing rooms will be part of the new facility. Gender-neutral changing rooms have become increasingly common in Stockholm in recent years, providing spaces equipped with bathrooms that can be used by both men and women.

“We are doing this so that everyone feels welcome. This has now become common practice in sports facilities,” said Clara Lindblom, the city’s property manager from the Left Party.

The renovations are expected to begin next year. The city council has allocated around 1.3 billion Swedish kronor for the refurbishment of the Eriksdalsbadet and Vällingby sports and swimming facilities by 2027.
