FALCON POWERS – Massive traffic volumes have caused travel delays in Germany, Croatia, and Slovenia as holidaymakers embark on their trips after the summer school break.
Traffic congestion has caused widespread chaos on European highways as vacationers head out to enjoy their summer holidays.
The General German Automobile Association (ADAC) expects this weekend to see some of the worst traffic jams of the year across the country.
Tailbacks will be particularly noticeable on roads in Bavaria as tourists head to popular holiday destinations in Italy and Austria, according to the ADAC. ADAC traffic expert Alexander Kreipl said the main wave of travelers departed on Friday, but many families will also be heading south over the weekend.
A German police spokesperson said 14 kilometers of traffic jams occurred on the Bavarian A8 highway leading to Austria.
Queues on Slovenian roads have also become longer at the peak of the summer season – this week marks the beginning of the school holidays for some. The Slovenian Traffic Safety Agency AVP has launched a warning campaign to remind drivers to take breaks on long journeys and stay hydrated on hot days.
Traffic jams are expected on the Ljubljana western bypass and on the Primorska highway.
Long lines can be seen in Croatia due to the uniquely high number of travelers and some traffic accidents.
Traffic had to move in a single lane between the eastern and central Zadar junctions towards Zagreb after a traffic accident – resulting in a jam of around 9 kilometers.
There is also congestion at the ferry port in Split – the Jadrolinija ferry company reported record-breaking traffic statistics of 16,000 vehicles and 80,000 passengers.
The Croatian Tourist Board is distributing water bottles and car air fresheners at major toll plazas and ferry ports this week as a welcome gesture for tourists.
