FALCON POWERS – Syrian media outlets have revealed Kuwaiti efforts to reopen its embassy in Damascus, which was closed 13 years ago.
Sources from the Syrian newspaper “Al-Watan” stated yesterday, Sunday, that a Kuwaiti delegation recently visited Damascus, paving the way for the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries at the highest level and as soon as possible.
The sources explained that a group of Kuwaiti businessmen also visited Damascus to explore opportunities for cooperation between the two countries with their Syrian counterparts.
It is noteworthy that at the beginning of 2024, the United Arab Emirates sent an ambassador to Damascus for the first time since closing its embassy in Damascus in 2011 at the start of the Syrian crisis, following the Arab League’s decision to suspend Syria’s membership. Most Arab countries had closed their embassies as well.
The new Emirati ambassador, Hassan Al-Shehhi, presented his credentials to the Syrian Foreign Minister, Faisal Al-Mekdad, at the headquarters of the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Additionally, Italy announced last week the appointment of an ambassador to Syria, after it had withdrawn all its staff from its embassy in Damascus in 2012 and suspended its diplomatic activity there.
With this step, Italy becomes the first country from the G7 group to relaunch its diplomatic mission in Damascus since the outbreak of the civil war in the country.
