FALCON POWERS – Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called on all sailors to refrain from transporting coal to Israel, after he issued a decree to officially suspend coal exports to Tel Aviv, which continues its attacks on Gaza.
Petro attacked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his X social media platform, saying “All sailors in the world, and our indigenous peoples, must refuse to transport coal from any country to Netanyahu.”
In response to critics of the decision to suspend coal exports to Israel, Petro said, “Palestinian children and humanity feel gratitude. What is happening is that those who have remained silent in Colombia against genocide do not understand this.”
Some politicians in the country criticized Petro’s government’s decision to suspend coal exports to Israel.
Former Industry and Commerce Inspector and former Deputy Minister of Justice Pablo Felipe Robledo said in a press statement that the suspension of coal exports to Israel is contrary to free economic competition and violates the law. As of August 18th, a Colombian presidential decree came into effect banning the export of coal to Israel, against the backdrop of Tel Aviv’s war on the Gaza Strip.
In an unprecedented rejection of Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip since last October 7th, the Colombian President commented on the decision, saying: “Israel makes bombs with it (coal) to kill Gaza’s children.”
