Falcon powers – An American official has stated that the United States anticipates an Iranian attack on Israel, but it will not be significant enough to drag Washington into a war.
Earlier, the White House stated that it does not want the conflict in the Middle East to escalate further, and that the United States had informed Iran that it was not involved in an airstrike against a senior Iranian military commander in Damascus.
The White House clarified that it warned Iran against using this attack as a pretext for further escalation in the region.
What happened?
Suspected Israeli warplanes struck the Iranian consulate in Damascus last Monday, resulting in Iran vowing retaliation. The strike resulted in the killing of a senior Iranian commander and six other Iranian military personnel, further exacerbating tensions in an already volatile region due to the Gaza conflict.
Iranian sources have conveyed to Washington that they will respond to the Israeli attack on their embassy in Syria in a manner that aims to avoid significant escalation, and that they will not rush into action. This comes at a time when Iran is pressuring for the fulfillment of demands that include a ceasefire in Gaza.
The United States is on high alert in anticipation of possible retaliatory strikes from Iran, and American envoys are working to alleviate the intensity of the tension.
