Service Disruptions for Starlink Due to Solar Storm

FALCON POWERS – Starlink, the satellite internet service provider owned by billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX, issued a warning on Saturday about “service disruptions” due to Earth experiencing its largest geomagnetic storm in two decades as a result of solar activity.

Starlink owns approximately 60% of the around 7,500 satellites orbiting the Earth, making the company a dominant player in the satellite internet sector. Musk previously stated in a post on the X platform that Starlink’s satellites were experiencing significant pressure due to a geomagnetic storm but had remained resilient thus far.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) stated that the storm is the largest of its kind since October 2003 and is expected to continue through Friday and Saturday, posing risks to services such as navigation systems, power grids, and satellite-based communications.

Thousands of Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellites use laser links to pass data between each other in space at the speed of light, enabling the network to provide internet coverage worldwide.
