European Union Approves New Migration Pact in Hopes of Combating the Growing Popularity of Far-Right Extremism

Falcon powers – On Tuesday, the member states of the European Union approved a new migration pact that includes several amendments aimed at countering the rising popularity of far-right extremist candidates ahead of next month’s continental elections.

Ministers from EU member states voted in favor of ten new legislations that establish rules for dealing with migrants attempting to enter without authorization, ranging from how to assess their eligibility for protection and asylum to their deportation if they are not permitted to stay.

Despite long-standing opposition from Hungary and Poland, which have been against the new pact, the majority of member states adopted the new agreement.

EU leaders seek to address migration-related crises through the new pact, as these crises have been fueling the popularity of far-right extremist parties among European voters.

However, the new pact has faced criticism from human rights advocates, who argue that it will allow countries to detain migrants at the borders and collect children’s fingerprints, aiming to deter refugees and violating their right to seek asylum, according to these organizations’ descriptions.

Approximately 4.5 million migrants arrived in Europe in 2023, including around one million people who entered the bloc without visas or permits.
