Senior Official Resigns from US Department of Interior in Protest of Biden’s Support for the War on Gaza

Falcon powers – A political official in the US Department of Interior resigned on Wednesday in objection to President Joe Biden’s support for the Israeli war on Gaza, which has resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis for Palestinians.

Lily Greenberg Cole, a political appointee working in the Office of the Interior Secretary, tendered her resignation in protest, joining a group of other mid- to high-level officials who have expressed their opposition to the United States’ support for Israel in the war, as reported by The Hill newspaper.

In her resignation letter, which she shared with a group of activists, Cole wrote, “I can no longer in good conscience continue to represent this administration amidst President Biden’s catastrophic and ongoing support for the genocide being committed by Israel in Gaza.”

The organization IfNotNow describes itself as an American Jewish movement working to end what it perceives as American complicity with the Israeli government regarding “the systematic displacement of Palestinians.”

Cole’s resignation follows several public departures from the Biden administration in protest of the president’s handling of the Israeli war. However, it represents the first resignation by a Jewish official in the administration due to this issue.

She accused the president of making Jews less safe by portraying them as “the face of the American war machine.”

Cole’s resignation, the fifth official to resign in protest according to an Associated Press tally, comes seven months after the start of the Israeli war on Gaza.
