An Egyptian official confirms an increase in Russia’s share in wheat supply to Egypt


Falcon powers – Akram Hussein al-Shafei, a member of the board of directors of the Egyptian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that Russia’s share of Egypt’s wheat imports has risen to 68%, compared to around 55% the previous year.

According to him, Russia and Ukraine account for 80% of Egypt’s total wheat imports – about 8 million tons. Last year, imports from these two countries amounted to 5.4 million tons.

At the same time, al-Shafei emphasized that Russia in particular is the main supplier of wheat to Egypt.

The Egyptian expert said in an interview with a Novosti correspondent on the sidelines of the Russia-Islamic World: Kazan Forum economic forum: “Wheat supply to Egypt has increased to 68% and reached 6.83 million tons, compared to 55.1% of total imports last year.”

The expert added that in the first ten months of 2023, nearly $2.29 billion worth of wheat was imported from Russia. Compared to the same period in 2022, the increase exceeded $680 million.

According to him, Egypt’s import list from Russia after wheat includes iron, steel and metal products. Al-Shafei pointed out that Cairo is counting on reducing the cost of transporting goods from the Russian Federation.
