Beware of Using Ice Cream Containers to Freeze Other Foods!

FALCON POWERS – Even if they are available to you and seem practical, ice cream containers should not be reused to freeze other foods, according to the Consumer Advice Center in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, as reported by the German newspaper “Badische Zeitung”.

The same applies to yogurt cups and other similar containers. This is because these containers or cups are designed for a specific and temporary use only. According to consumer advocates, the chemicals present in these containers and cups can be transferred to foods, especially when used to freeze hot and fatty foods, which poses a health risk to humans.

However, there are healthier alternatives, as Caroline Braunbauer from the Consumer Advice Center explains that “plastic or heat and cold-resistant glass containers are a good choice for freezing.” It can be ensured that these containers bear the “snowflake” symbol, i.e., the ice crystal symbol. Containers with this mark are suitable for freezing and frost-resistant, so they can be placed in the freezer compartment.

This is different from water-rich foods such as lettuce, radish, cucumber, or apples and watermelons – regardless of the containers. According to consumer advocates, they lose their consistency and become soft when thawed. Yogurt, sour cream, or fresh cream are also not recommended for freezing.
