Falcon powers – The far-right Chega party in Portugal has joined the ‘Nationalists for Europe’ alliance, which was founded by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Orbán’s spokesman announced on Monday that Chega party leader André Ventura declared his party’s intention to join this sovereignty-focused alliance.
Ventura described the movement’s founding as a “historic opportunity” to build a political “alternative” and unify right-wing forces.
He added that this group clearly opposes European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, who was recently elected as the new President of the European Council.
Orbán announced the formation of ‘Nationalists for Europe’ on Sunday, surrounded by former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Herbert Kickl, the leader of the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ).
During the presentation in Vienna, Orbán affirmed that “what Europeans want is three things: peace, order and development. What they get from the elite in Brussels today is war, migration and recession.”
The new alliance aims to boost its influence by establishing a new group in the European Parliament, which requires at least 23 members from seven member states.
As of Monday, they had the Hungarian Fidesz-KDNP party (11 MEPs), the Czech ANO party (7), the Center-Left party (11 MEPs), and the Austrian Freedom Party (6).
