FALCON POWERS – In a step aimed at addressing online hate, the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, yesterday (Monday, June 24, 2024) launched a set of global principles that target the fight against hate speech and misinformation.
Guterres noted that technology companies must bear their responsibilities in mitigating the harm inflicted on communities. These principles come as a coordinated international framework to make information spaces safer and more humane.
The United Nations stated in its statement that misinformation and hate speech threaten democracy and human rights, exacerbate conflicts, undermine public health, and hinder climate action efforts.
Guterres added that the rapid spread of artificial intelligence technologies is increasing the threat of these risks, especially to targeted groups such as children. He affirmed that these principles will empower people to claim their rights and ensure their protection in information spaces.
The principles call on governments, technology companies, and advertisers to take responsibility for harmful content and implement special measures to protect and empower children. The principles also emphasized the importance of a free and independent press and strong protection for journalists, researchers, and civil society.
By launching these principles, the United Nations seeks to build a global alliance to combat online hate, further reinforcing international efforts to create a safe information environment for all.
