FALCON POWERS – At the diplomatic level at least, May 2024 will be recorded in Palestinian history as a very important month, as during a vote, the United Nations General Assembly granted Palestinians more rights. All they need is to obtain the right to vote to secure full membership.
The improved status of Palestinian diplomats on the international stage seems imminent, as five European countries are moving towards officially recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state. On one hand, this move comes in solidarity with the civilian population in the Gaza Strip. On the other hand, this step is seen as positioning in favor of the two-state solution to the long-standing conflict in the Middle East, while the current right-wing government in Israel strongly opposes this proposal.
After the terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the goal of the war was to “destroy” the movement governing the Gaza Strip. He also stated that he wants long-term control over the Palestinian Gaza Strip. But due to the harsh military intervention that, according to Palestinian figures, led to the death of more than 35,000 civilians, and the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, Israel is now facing immense international pressure.
Spain – Is it an impartial mediator in the Middle East? Both Spain and Ireland, in particular, intend to increase pressure on Israel during this period through the recognition of Palestine as a state. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has held numerous meetings on this issue with his European partners in recent months. According to reports, Sánchez was the first to raise the initiative at the European Union level, but due to the refusal of Germany and other countries in the Union, he established the “Alliance of the Willing” from among the supporters of the idea.
