Falcon powers – Arab and international reactions poured in on Monday, May 27, 2024, condemning the Rafah Khayam massacre, as the UNRWA said that the image of last night is another testimony that “Gaza has become a hell on earth”.
More than 35 Palestinians were martyred, and dozens were injured, mostly women and children, in Israeli airstrikes that targeted two homes and a camp for the displaced northwest of Rafah.
The camp was located within areas previously designated by the occupation army as safe, and the displaced were called to head to them, without any statements or warnings issued to the displaced and residents of the area to evacuate.
Qatar: Serious Violation of International Laws
Qatar said it “strongly condemns the Israeli bombardment that targeted a camp for the displaced in Rafah, Gaza, which resulted in dozens of martyrs and wounded.”
Jordan Calls to Hold Perpetrators Accountable
Jordan, in turn, called for holding those responsible for targeting the displaced camp in the city of Rafah accountable, considering the bombardment “a blatant challenge to the decisions of the International Court of Justice and a serious violation of international law and international humanitarian law.”
Egypt Describes the Shelling as a “Tragic Incident”
For its part, Egypt described the Israeli shelling of the tents of the displaced people as a “tragic incident”, calling on the United Nations Security Council to intervene to ensure the end of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip and the operations in the city of Rafah.
Egypt considered this shelling “a new and blatant violation of the rules of international humanitarian law, and the provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 regarding the protection of civilians in time of war.”
Egypt also called on “Israel to comply with its legal obligations as an occupying power, and to implement the measures issued by the International Court of Justice regarding the immediate cessation of military operations and any other measures in the Palestinian city of Rafah,” according to the same statement.
Accordingly, Cairo reiterated its demand to the “Security Council and the influential international parties to intervene immediately to ensure an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and to end the military operations in the Palestinian city of Rafah.”
It stressed the “imperative for the international community to fulfill its legal and humanitarian responsibility to provide protection for Palestinian civilians and prevent exposing them to risks that threaten their lives.”
Meanwhile, Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris called on the officials in Egypt to allow the injured to enter Egypt, adding: “I will cover the treatment expenses, please respond.”
