Falcon powers – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in an interview with CNN published on Friday, confirmed that the Biden administration has detected evidence of China’s attempts to influence the upcoming US elections.
Blinken, who concluded his three-day visit to China, stated that during his meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other officials, he emphasized that any intervention in the US elections is “completely unacceptable.”
This action would represent a violation of the commitments made by Xi Jinping to President Biden during their meeting in November in Woodside, California.
When asked if Xi had violated the Woodside commitments, Blinken said, “In general, we have seen evidence of attempts to influence and interfere, and we are working to ensure that it stops as soon as possible.”
Blinken did not specify any specific evidence of Chinese intervention in the elections, nor did he confirm that the Chinese government had violated Xi Jinping’s own commitments to Biden.
However, in early April, The New York Times reported that secret Chinese accounts disguised as supporters of former President Donald Trump, the presumed Republican presidential candidate, were promoting conspiracy theories, fueling internal divisions, and attacking Biden ahead of the November elections.
Blinken indicated that he informed Xi Jinping and other Chinese officials that “any Chinese intervention in the US elections is closely monitored by us and is completely unacceptable. So, I wanted to make sure they heard that message again.”
In addition to Xi, Blinken met with senior Chinese officials, including Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Minister of Public Security Zhao Kezhi, and Shanghai Party Secretary Chen Jin’ning.
Blinken’s trip aimed to enhance open communication with Chinese officials and maintain it amid the tense relations between Washington and Beijing.
