Cabinet to Vote Today on Closing Al Jazeera Office in Israel

Falcon powers – The Israeli Ministerial Committee on Political and Security Affairs (Cabinet) is set to vote this evening, Thursday, on the closure of Al Jazeera’s office in Israel, following the approval of the government’s legal advisor, Galit Baram Mira.

This comes in light of Al Jazeera’s extensive media coverage of Israel’s war on Gaza and its coverage of war crimes committed in the Gaza Strip.

Cabinet members will vote on ceasing the broadcast of Al Jazeera in both Arabic and English in Israel, as well as closing the channel’s offices and blocking its websites, according to the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation “Kan.”

According to the stance of the Israeli legal advisor, it is possible to approve the closure of Al Jazeera in Israel without granting the channel the right to respond to Israeli allegations against it, despite the legal difficulties involved in such a procedure, as stated by Baram Mira in a memorandum to the legal advisor of the Israeli Ministry of Communications.

The Likud party, led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, opposed the legislation that allows restrictions on social media networks, limiting it only to television channels.

The Director of the Cyber Department in the Attorney General’s Office, Haim Nisimianoski, pointed out that it is “not possible to issue an order to close the widely spread Al Jazeera pages on Facebook,” which means that Israel does not have the technological capability to prevent the viewing of Al Jazeera in Israel.
