FALCON POWERS – About four months after the US presidential election, the German government is preparing for the possibility of a second Trump term. How could his return impact Germany and the European Union?
Political experts in Germany say that Berlin is already preparing for a potential change in the US presidency next November. If Donald Trump’s election in 2016 surprised most countries in the world, sources close to Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government say the latter is now taking steps to ensure a smoother process if the Republicans regain power from the Democrats.
Political scientist Dr. Antonius Soares told Euronews in a phone interview: “It is likely that Trump will be elected again.”
“Ultimately, it is difficult to remain partners under a difficult administration led by Donald Trump. But Germany has proven capable of working one way or another, as it did the last time Trump was president. And while it must be said that the new administration had not yet taken office at that time, the situation remains delicate.” The world was a different place in 2016 when Trump was first elected – former Chancellor Angela Merkel was still in power, the pandemic had not yet struck the world, and Russia had not yet launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
If Trump is re-elected, he would deal with the coalition government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which has a limited lifespan as German voters are expected to choose a new chancellor and parliament in October 2025. Recent polls show the conservative German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) steadily gaining ground.
