Chile’s capital sees its harshest cold wave in 70 years, with temperatures approaching zero

FALCON POWERS – For the first time in over 70 years… Chileans are suffering from severe cold and low temperatures in May

The Chilean capital Santiago is experiencing low temperatures approaching zero, and experts have indicated that the level of temperature drop the capital is witnessing is rare, as May of this year is considered the coldest in the past seventy years.

During the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Chilean Meteorological Office spoke of the coldest morning of the year, with temperatures reaching three degrees Celsius below zero.

In this regard, Raúl Cordero, a climate scientist at the University of Santiago, said: “Cold air masses from the southern polar latitudes that lower the temperature to below zero usually occur from June/July onwards, and do not happen often in May.”

The low temperatures on Wednesday broke the record for the longest cold wave in Santiago, and were the lowest since the 1950s.

Patricia Ramírez, who lives in Santiago, said: “Yes, the weather is colder this year, and the cold has started earlier.”
