EU Foreign Affairs Chief: We Will Work Towards a Joint Position Among the 27 Members on Recognition of the State of Palestine

FALCON POWERS – The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, announced on Wednesday that he “took note” of the recognition of the State of Palestine by two of the EU’s 27 member states, Spain and Ireland, and expressed his desire to work towards a “common position” of the Union.

Borrell said on the X platform: “I will work tirelessly, within the framework of the Common Foreign and Security Policy, with all the Member States to encourage the adoption of a common position of the European Union based on the two-state solution.”

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has decided to summon the ambassadors of Spain, Norway and Ireland in Tel Aviv in response to their countries’ recognition of the Palestinian state.

Earlier today, the three countries took this step in parallel, bringing the number of states that recognize the Palestinian state to 147 out of 193 member states of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement: After the return of the Israeli ambassadors from Ireland and Norway, Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz ordered the immediate return of our ambassador to Spain for consultations, following Spain’s intention to recognize the Palestinian state.

Katz also ordered the summoning of the ambassadors of Spain, Norway and Ireland to strongly reprimand them, and to watch a “video” regarding the attacks of the Palestinian resistance factions on October 7th last, according to the statement.
