Fact Check: What Do US Bills on Aid to Israel and Ukraine Include?

FALCONPOWERS – The US House of Representatives, currently dominated by Republicans, is expected to vote on Saturday on aid packages for Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific region, along with a national security bill that could effectively ban the use of TikTok in the United States. Here’s what these four bills entail, according to a summary released by the House Appropriations Committee.

  1. Ukraine Aid Bill:
The largest of the four bills, valued at $60.84 billion, is allocated to support Ukraine in its ongoing battle against Russian aggression, which has been ongoing for the past two years. This includes $23.2 billion to address weapon shortfalls, replenish stocks, and upgrade American facilities, and $11.3 billion for ongoing US military operations in the region.

Although the United States does not have forces in Ukraine, it provides training for Ukrainian forces in other locations in the region, in addition to matters such as readiness and presence throughout the continent.

The bill also includes $13.8 billion for the purchase of advanced weapon systems, along with $26 million for “continuation of oversight and accountability” for aid provided to Ukraine.

If approved, this funding would bring the total US investment in the conflict to $170 billion. It would also mark the first new funding approved by Congress since Republicans took control of the House in January 2023.

  1. Aid to Israel:
The bill allocates $26.38 billion to support Israel and cover US military operations in response to recent attacks. Approximately $5.2 billion will go towards compensating for deficiencies in Israel’s missile defense system and expanding it. Another $3.5 billion will be allocated for the purchase of advanced weapon systems, $1 billion to enhance weapon production, and $4.4 billion for supplies and other services provided to Israel.

The bill will also prohibit funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

  1. Indo-Pacific Aid Bill:
This bill is focused on providing assistance to countries in the Indo-Pacific region to counter China’s influence. It includes $3.4 billion for security assistance, $3.2 billion for economic aid, and $300 million for climate change initiatives.
  2. National Security Bill:
The national security bill aims to address various security concerns and includes provisions related to banning the use of TikTok in the United States. The specifics of the ban and its implementation are not detailed in the summary.

It’s important to note that these details are based on a summary provided by the House Appropriations Committee, and the final versions of the bills may undergo amendments and modifications during the legislative process.
