Falcon powers – The G7 leaders warned on Friday that a large-scale Israeli offensive in Rafah would have further “disastrous consequences” for civilians in Gaza’s southernmost city.
“We are calling on the government of Israel to refrain from such an offensive,” the leaders of the world’s largest developed economies said on the second day of their annual summit, according to a communique released on Friday evening.
US President Joe Biden and summit host Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Group of Seven gathering at Borgo Egnazia resort, in Puglia, southern Italy.
They stressed “the importance of Hamas taking a constructive approach as part of this process”, the White House said.
Mr Biden and Ms Meloni also reaffirmed their commitment to a “comprehensive agreement with regard to the conflict in Gaza for the end of hostilities, the release of hostages and the strengthening of humanitarian support for the civilian population”, said the Italian Prime Minister’s office.
