FALCON POWERS – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron warned on Monday that Europe is facing a “mortal danger” amid the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine, in a joint article published in the Financial Times.
In the article, which was timed to coincide with Macron’s state visit to Germany, the leaders said “we cannot take for granted the foundations on which our European way of life and role in the world have been built.”
They added: “The Europe we belong to is facing a mortal danger, and we must rise to the challenge.”
Macron agreed with the term “watershed moment” used in the opinion piece, which the German Chancellor had previously used to describe the historic shift in Germany’s policy, especially the increase in defense spending after the outbreak of the Ukraine war.
The leaders wrote: “Looking back at the challenges we have faced over the past five years, be it the pandemic or the ongoing Russian war of aggression against Ukraine or the growing geopolitical shifts – the answer is clear. Europe is experiencing a watershed moment” between the end of an era and the start of a new one.
