FALCON POWERS – The Palestinian Hamas movement has announced the selection of Yahya Al-Sinwar as the new head of the movement’s Political Bureau, replacing Ismail Haniyeh.
Israel assassinated Ismail Haniyeh, the former head of Hamas’ Political Bureau and former Palestinian Prime Minister, on July 31st in the Iranian capital Tehran, where he was participating in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian President Massoud Bazshakian. Haniyeh’s personal bodyguard, a field leader in the Qassam Brigades, Wasim Abu Shaban, was also killed alongside Haniyeh.
Who is Yahya Al-Sinwar?
Yahya Al-Sinwar is the leader of the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip. He was born in 1962. Israel arrested him multiple times and sentenced him to four life sentences before releasing him in a prisoner exchange deal in 2011. He then returned to his activities in leading the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades (the military wing of Hamas). He was elected as the head of the movement in Gaza in 2017 and again in 2021.
The Israeli occupation considers Yahya Al-Sinwar responsible for the “Al-Aqsa Tempest” operation on October 7, 2023, which inflicted human and military losses on them and shook the image of their intelligence and security apparatuses in front of the world.
Israel has declared that the elimination of Yahya Al-Sinwar is one of the objectives of its “Iron Swords” operation on the Gaza Strip, which came in response to the “Al-Aqsa Tempest” operation.
