FALCON POWERS – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Friday that several people were injured “severely” in a “knife attack” that occurred in the city of Mannheim, condemning the “horrific” scenes of the attack.
Scholz wrote on the X platform that “violence is absolutely unacceptable in our democracy”, while several German media reported that among the injured were an anti-Islam activist and a police officer, noting that the attacker was shot dead by law enforcement.
According to local media, the conservative politician and anti-Islam activist Michael Stürzenbecher was stabbed during a public meeting in Mannheim, in addition to 3 other people including a police officer who was stabbed in the neck while trying to apprehend the attacker.
The police said the incident occurred in the market square of the city in the southwest of the country around 11:30 am local time, confirming that several people were injured in a knife attack on a far-right demonstration.
They added: “A large police operation is currently underway in the market square in Mannheim. No further information can be provided at this time.”
