Iraq Discusses Fair Share of Water for the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers with Erdogan

Falconpowers – Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, stated on Sunday that Turkey granting Iraq a fair share of water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers is among the prominent issues that will be discussed with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his visit to Baghdad on Monday.

“We have interests that concern us, the most important of which is the issue of water, and we seek, according to established agreements, a fair and equitable share of water for the Tigris and Euphrates rivers,” according to the Iraqi News Agency (WAA).

He explained, “The technicians are responsible, and they will discuss this matter to reach specific figures in this regard.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had emphasized that the water issue would be one of the most important items on his agenda during his visit to Iraq, stating that “Turkey is studying requests submitted by the Iraqi side regarding water and seeking to solve this problem, in addition to other issues related to the flow of natural gas and oil to Turkey.”

The Turkish Foreign Ministry announced that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan would visit Iraq before the end of April.

It is worth mentioning that Iraq consumes more water from the Euphrates River than it receives, which means that there is an ongoing water deficit that is worsening, reaching a rate of 7%, according to the digital analysis of the announced figures.

The “Sumaria News” website explained that Iraq receives 18.1 million cubic meters daily, while it consumes more than 19.4 million cubic meters daily, which means that Iraq consumes 1.3 million cubic meters of water from the Euphrates daily without compensating for this quantity.
