Iraq… Drone attack on “Ain Al-Asad”

FALCON POWERS – Iraqi security sources reported on Wednesday that the “Ain Al-Asad” military base of the international coalition against extremists, located in western Iraq, was targeted by an attack with two drones on Tuesday night, without causing any damage or casualties.

The attack, which targeted the base located in Anbar Governorate in western Iraq, comes amid regional tensions fueled by the war in Gaza, and an escalation in the rhetoric of pro-Iranian armed factions that have claimed responsibility for this type of attack and which have largely curbed their attacks against the United States and its ally Israel in recent months. However, they have threatened retaliation if the Israeli forces attack the Lebanese Hezbollah.

A source in the Anbar Governorate police, where Ain Al-Asad is located, told AFP: “An attack with two drones targeted the Ain Al-Asad base.” The source, who preferred not to reveal his identity, added that “the attack occurred on Tuesday evening, and one of the drones was shot down outside the base by the (air defense) system, and the second exploded inside the base without causing any injuries or damage.”

A senior Iraqi security official in Baghdad confirmed the attack with two drones against the base, noting that one of them “fell” outside the Ain Al-Asad base and the other inside the base “without causing any damage.”

The official speculated that the attack was aimed at “embarrassing” the Iraqi government and “pressuring” for the withdrawal of the international coalition against extremists, which is a demand repeatedly made by the pro-Iranian factions.
