Israel: 32 patients diagnosed with West Nile fever

FALCON POWERS – The Israeli Ministry of Health reported that 32 people have so far been diagnosed with West Nile fever.

The Israeli Health Ministry noted that 27 of them have been hospitalized – three of them on ventilators. Over the weekend, two patients died at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva. It was reported that all the patients are from the central region.

It pointed out that about 80% of those infected do not show symptoms of West Nile fever. About 20% of those infected show symptoms to varying degrees, including fever, general fatigue, headache or body aches, and neurological complications that appear in less than 1% of those infected.

The Israeli Ministry of Health has clarified the guidelines for medical teams and issued instructions to confirm the diagnosis and monitor the disease.

To reduce exposure to mosquitoes, the ministry recommended using mosquito repellent products and appropriate tools to keep mosquitoes away in living spaces, as well as running fans in accommodation areas.

It said “West Nile fever infection has been known to us for many years and occurs mainly between the months of June and November. This year, the infection started earlier than usual, and this is likely due to climate changes in Israel and in the world, where the humid weather in the central region may lead to the proliferation and development of mosquitoes in this area. The great risk of infection is among the elderly and people with low immunity.”
