Falconpowers – After three months of secret talks, Israel and Indonesia, in cooperation with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), have reached an agreement to normalize relations between the two countries. The agreement comes as part of efforts to facilitate Indonesia’s accession to the organization, which currently has 38 member states.
In a letter from Matthias Korman, the Secretary-General of the OECD in the field of economic affairs, to Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, official approval was granted by the council for the conditions of Indonesia’s membership, emphasizing the need for Indonesia to maintain diplomatic relations with all member states before any decision to accept it as a member. The agreement also requires unanimous approval from all member states, including Israel, for Indonesia’s accession.
Katz responded by welcoming the breakthrough, expressing his expectation for positive improvements in the relations between the two countries, including allowing Indonesia to commence the process of joining the OECD.
Sources involved in the process indicate that Indonesia has been seeking membership in the organization, but it required unanimous consent from all member states, which stipulate the existence of relations between all member countries.
The organization requested that Israel not oppose Indonesia’s accession, but due to Indonesia’s previous stance against Israel, Minister Katz requested a gesture from Indonesia to affirm its sincerity towards the normalization of relations with Israel.
After a series of negotiations, the OECD and Indonesia agreed to the condition that, before the final vote and its accession to the organization, Indonesia must establish diplomatic relations with Israel. This step represents a significant progress in the relations between the two countries and promises to bring about a positive change in the region.
