Legal Proposal Suggests Ban on Adopting Children from Outside Sweden, Allowing Adoption Only from Within Sweden

FALCON POWERS – A new government legal proposal in Sweden suggests banning the adoption of children from outside the country, allowing adoption only from within Sweden. The proposal was prepared by an investigative committee within the Swedish government, but details about which children can be adopted from within Sweden have not been disclosed.

This proposal comes amid reports and investigations in Sweden indicating that children adopted from outside the country were forcibly taken from their parents for the purpose of making money by adoption agencies. The investigative committee stated in a draft report, “We can confirm that, despite significant efforts, violations still exist in international adoption processes. Although there is a trend toward banning adoptions from outside Sweden, a final decision has not yet been reached.” The alternative would be to allow only internal adoptions within Sweden. The committee is expected to submit its report to the Ministry of Social Affairs in March of next year.
