FALCON POWERS – The Mexican National Institute of Migration reported on Sunday that around 1.39 million undocumented migrants from 177 countries passed through Mexico between January and May, in an attempt to reach the United States.
The institute stated in a statement that these are predominantly adults traveling alone, while around 3,000 are unaccompanied minors.
These migrants came from 177 countries, which is almost the majority of countries in the world.
According to the institute, the largest number of people, or around 380,000, came from Venezuela, a country suffering from a severe economic crisis, followed by Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, and Haiti, all of which have been severely affected by gang violence and drug trafficking.
Other individuals who tried the dangerous crossing route from Mexico in search of a better life in the United States came from distant places such as China, Mauritania, India, and Angola, according to the Mexican National Institute of Migration.
In 2023, more than 2.4 million people crossed the Mexico-United States border illegally, according to US immigration statistics. The flow reached a record high of 10,000 people per day in December. Since then, it has decreased, as both countries have taken restrictive measures.
In early June, US President Joe Biden tightened restrictions through an executive order that facilitates deportations to Mexico and limits asylum rights when there is a very large number of arrivals.
