Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso Agree on Final Formula to Form a Confederate Union

FALCON POWERS – The authorities of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have agreed on the “final formula” for a plan to form a confederal union of Sahel African countries, according to the French news agency AFP.

The foreign ministers of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger announced the final touches on a draft treaty to establish a Sahel alliance confederation. After the meeting, Niger’s Foreign Minister Bakary Yau Sangare said the final text will be adopted at a summit of the three countries’ military government leaders, but did not specify a date for the meeting.

The agency reported that the journalists were not informed of the content of the agreement.

This meeting is considered the second of its kind for the foreign ministers of the Sahel countries and is part of the preparations for an upcoming summit of the Sahel alliance leaders.

On January 28th, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In September 2023, the leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger signed a charter to establish a Sahel alliance, and according to the charter, an attack on the sovereignty or territorial integrity of any of the participating countries will be considered an aggression against the entire alliance, requiring a collective military intervention.

Malian Defense Minister Abdallah Diouabsaid that “this alliance will be a mix of military and economic efforts between the three countries.”
