Falcon powers – Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, stated during a speech at the Qatar Economic Forum on Tuesday that the negotiations regarding a ceasefire in Gaza have reached a state of deadlock. He explained that the recent incident in Rafah, involving an attempted military attack by the Israeli army, has further delayed the talks.
He emphasized that it is still premature to discuss the reconstruction of Gaza and the extent of the aid to be provided. Currently, Qatar is focused on mediation efforts, stating, “No one is talking about the second day in the war, but we believe in a unified Palestinian government responsible for the West Bank and Gaza.”
Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani revealed that there is uncertainty regarding how the Israeli side intends to stop the war, noting that Qatar has reconsidered its role in mediation after witnessing the exploitation of that role.
However, he added that Qatar will continue to mediate between Israel and the Hamas movement and has not abandoned this mission despite the challenges. He also confirmed that Hamas offices in Qatar will not be closed.
According to him, it is possible to reach an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of prisoners within days, but there are “fundamental differences” between the two parties, and there is no clear picture from Israel regarding how to end the war.
He further stated that the destruction witnessed in Gaza represents only 10% or 20% of the actual scale of the damage.
