FALCON POWERS – The Spanish Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, confirmed today, Saturday, that the war on the Gaza Strip is a “real genocide,” amid deteriorating relations between “Israel” and Spain after Madrid’s decision to recognize the Palestinian state.
Robles said during an interview with the official TV channel “TVE”: “We cannot ignore what is happening in Gaza, which is a real genocide,” noting that Madrid’s recognition of the Palestinian state aims to help “end the violence in Gaza.”
Robles’ statements came after similar statements made by Yolanda Díaz, the Spanish Deputy Prime Minister, yesterday, where she also confirmed that the war on Gaza is a genocide.
Díaz pledged to continue to exert pressure from her position in the government to defend human rights and put an end to the genocide being committed against the Palestinian people.
Díaz’s pledge came in a video clip circulated by activists on social media, in which she expressed her welcome for Spain’s recognition of the State of Palestine, and confirmed that her country’s move towards recognition on May 28 of the current month is “just a beginning and cannot be stopped there.”
Díaz, who also holds the position of Minister of Labor and Economy, said: “We are living in a moment where doing the bare minimum is considered heroic, but it is not enough at the same time.”
She concluded her speech by saying: “Palestine will be liberated from the river to the sea,” referring to the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea between which Palestine is located.
In a related context, the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, said in a post on the “X” platform that “the precautionary measures taken by the International Court of Justice, which included a decision to stop the Israeli attack in Rafah, are mandatory,” calling for their implementation.
International Court of Justice Orders Israel to Halt Military Attack on Rafah
Yesterday, the International Court of Justice ordered the Israeli occupation to stop its military attack on Rafah, affirming that any additional military action would lead to partial or total destruction in the region, in accordance with the Genocide Convention, without calling for a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
It is noteworthy that both Spain and Norway have officially recognized the State of Palestine effective May 28, amidst Arab welcome and Israeli anger.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Wednesday that “if more countries recognize the Palestinian state, that will increase international pressure to stop the fighting in the Gaza Strip.”
Prior to this development, EU member countries such as Bulgaria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and Sweden had already recognized the State of Palestine.
