Sudan records more than ten million internally displaced people in the country

FALCON POWERS – Sudan has recorded more than ten million internally displaced people, including more than seven million people who were displaced after the outbreak of the war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces last year, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Tuesday.

The organization wrote on its “X” platform account that “more than ten million people in Sudan have fled their homes, as the war has pushed around a quarter of the population to leave their homes.” The organization had warned last week that the number of displaced people due to the war in Sudan could reach 10 million in the coming days, describing the situation as a continuation of “the worst internal displacement crisis in the world.”

The United Nations organization explained that the number of displaced people across the country since the outbreak of the war has reached 7.26 million people, in addition to 2.83 million displaced before the war.

The war in Sudan has been raging since mid-April 2023 between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

This war has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands, including up to 15,000 people in Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state, according to United Nations experts.

However, the death toll from the war remains unclear, with some estimates suggesting it reaches “150,000” according to the US Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello.

The war has also pushed about 2.5 million people to flee to neighboring countries.

On Tuesday, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, expressed his “deep concern” about the violence in the vast Darfur region of western Sudan, and urged witnesses there to send evidence to his office to assist in the investigation of international crimes.

On Monday, Doctors Without Borders announced the closure of the last remaining hospital still in service in El-Fasher, after an attack by the Rapid Support Forces, which are trying to take control of this main city in Darfur.
