FALCON POWERS – A Ukrainian military source told Sky News that a Ukrainian warplane launched a “first-of-its-kind” weapon that hit a target inside Russia.
The source said that a “Russian command center” was hit on Sunday in the Belgorod region, western Russia, which is near the border with northeastern Ukraine.
It was not immediately clear what type of ammunition was used in the attack, including whether it was Western-supplied.
The United States and France recently allowed the Ukrainian armed forces to use their weapons to strike military targets inside Russia, where the Russian forces are launching attacks against Ukraine. Under the new guidelines approved by US President Joe Biden, American ammunition can be used on Russian territory to help defend the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine.
Direct Hit
A military source, who requested anonymity, told Sky News: “The Ukrainian Air Force struck a Russian command point in Belgorod.”
He added: “While damage assessment is ongoing, a direct hit has been confirmed. This is the first ammunition fired by the Ukrainian Air Force against a target inside Russia.”
Ukraine has launched several drone strikes deep into Russian territory, but the use of a warplane to hit targets inside Russia marks a new escalation.
