Iranian media reported this evening the assassination of “Mohammad Reza Zahedi,” a prominent commander in the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, as a result of an Israeli airstrike targeting the Iranian consulate building in Damascus.
The SANA news agency quoted a Syrian military source as saying: “At around 00:17 this evening, the Israeli enemy launched an aerial aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, targeting the Iranian consulate building in Damascus. Our air defense systems intercepted the aggression’s missiles and shot down some of them. The aggression led to the complete destruction of the building, as well as the martyrdom and injury of everyone inside. Efforts are underway to retrieve the martyrs’ bodies, provide medical assistance to the wounded, and remove the debris.”
Eyewitnesses reported the killing of several Iranian diplomats in the attack on the Iranian consulate building in the Mezzeh neighborhood of Damascus. According to Iranian state TV, the consulate building was completely destroyed, while Ambassador Hussein Akbari and his family were unharmed.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority stated that “the army waited for the departure of the Iranian consul and targeted Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Quds Force.”
The Israeli Army Radio said, “Mohammad Reza Zahedi is not only a high-ranking Iranian military figure, but he is also a very veteran figure, 79 years old, who led the Revolutionary Guard forces during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. He was the commander of the ground forces and the commander of the air forces of the Revolutionary Guard and held a series of high-ranking positions in the Iranian General Staff.”
