While many have interpreted this as a distinctive natural shyness of Japanese women, Yumi Nakata, a Japanese-born and American-educated woman, offers a different explanation.
In her personal blog dedicated to introducing various aspects of Japan, Nakata explains that unlike American culture, which celebrates a beautiful smile, the Japanese society considers a woman laughing loudly as unacceptable. Additionally, according to Nakata, many Japanese people suffer from dental problems, which may cause women to feel embarrassed about revealing their irregular teeth when smiling or laughing.
Furthermore, Japanese society is characterized by a strong collective spirit that drives individuals to imitate each other’s behavior. As a result, women tend to mimic each other by placing their hands over their mouths when smiling.
